Usually they say what a difference a week makes, but in the case of Wayne Rooney and Manchester United, it was, what a difference a couple of days makes! Just as it looked like the United front man was on his way out of Old Trafford, blasting the clubs lack of ambition as his main reason for wanting to leave, Master Rooney performed a u-turn and pledged his future to the Reds. So what happened to the lack of ambition? Maybe it had something to do with the vast sums of money he is reportedly going to be pocketing per week, anyhow, I am sure Rooney , Sir Alex and his team mates will want to put this episode in the past and get back to business. So where does that leave Manchester United in the title race? They have already struggled so far this season and there is no doubt that the poor form and speculation that had been surrounding Rooney has had an overall effect on the team. United will still be involved in the title race come the end of the season but they will surely drift further behind

As promised here are my idea of the first 3 home in this years National GRAND NATIONAL 4.15 No20 SNOWY MORNING (best price 16/1) No 22 BIG FELLA THANKS (best price 11/1) No37 PALYSO DE CREEK (best price 100/1) One thing I do feel is that is likely to be a fast pace on this year and as a result plenty of fallers. Fingers crossed that all come back safely. Don't forget to come back tomorrow for my thoughts on the week in racing. By the way just to confirm the Flat Turf season has started despite nothing doing in that sphere both today and tomorrow!! ST

It’s now or never for the Europeans, this has got to be their time to show that they can get across the finishing line when it counts. With the exception of Padraig once briefly in the 2008 PGA, this generation of talented group of wannabes has constantly flattered to deceive in top US events. Unless one or more can rise above also-ran status they are destined to remain journeyman, unlike their dullard American counterparts Zach Johnson and Lucas Glover, who somehow managed enough bottle to claim their career fulfilling, lifetime achieving, one and only Majors. Why is it that Campbell, Ogilvy, Immelman and Cabrera (twice) can steel themselves to overcome the massive pressure of a Major but just when the Europeans look like ending the years of drought, they self-destruct? Surely now is the time. Woods has got to be ring-rusty (excuse the pun), smarmy Mickelson is all over the place off the tee (please God not him!), most of the rest of the Americans are lightweights. If the Europeans

With leaders Chelsea looking forward to their FA Cup semi-final with Aston Villa at Wembley on Saturday evening Man United has the perfect opportunity to retake top spot by bagging three points at Ewood Park on Sunday. Their hosts Blackburn has performed very well of late and have two wins and two draws in their last four and that includes a 1-1 with Chelsea here last month. They also took points off Liverpool earlier in the season and have won five of their last six at home. On the other hand United have only won on two of their last six visits and have the huge disappointment of their Champions league exit at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday to overcome. This has not been a good week for the Old Trafford side and being dumped out of Europe following the tepid display against Chelsea means that they must take three points here to keep the pressure on the Blues. Whether Rooney plays, having surprisingly started against Bayern in midweek before being substituted may be irrelevant

With Chelsea's six match form worse than that of either Wigan or West Ham and Tottenham firing on all cylinders with recent wins over Liverpool and Arsenal and also winning their Champions League group, it is difficult to see how the layers can justify their prices ahead of the big clash at White Hart Lane on Sunday. The champions are uniformly favourite which is a surprise but also presents us with a value opportunity as the home win is nudging 2/1 in places and looks outstanding value. Chelsea has been playing better than their results of late but a midweek defeat in Marseille will have knocked their confidence once more and until the ship is steadied we must oppose the Blues. The return of Frank Lampard is the big hope for Chelsea but it is expecting a great deal of him to return anything other than ring rusty and with Spurs on a high following their excellent results in Europe the Lilywhites are a confident bet. The weekends main event takes place on Monday night when second placed

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney is the only British player to be included in the 2012 Ballon d'Or shortlist made up of 23 players from around the world. The FIFA Ballon d'Or award is one of the most prestigious accolades in football, and is given to the best performing player of the past season. The decision is reached by votes from coaches and captains of all international teams, in addition to journalists worldwide. This is one of the reasons why the award is highly regarded, as it is truly a comprehensive vote from every part of the footballing world. I am always impressed when journalists are included in these events, as it really does mean the award is very much recognised by all. Personally, I do not have any huge expectations of Wayne winning the award, most of the betting will be on the usual suspects like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, it is good to know that the only British player came from Manchester United! The club is also represented with Robin

They might be flying high at the top of the Premier League but this weekend Man United have an FA Cup fifth round tie to play at Old Trafford on Saturday against non-league Crawley and with such a gulf in class it is difficult to see a betting angle. The romance for Crawley is simply playing at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ but with Ferguson sure to rest most of his first team with a Champions League game coming in midweek we could be in for a much tighter clash than the layers expect. We must expect the visitors to make their presence felt, so bookings look a buy and the chances must be that the likes of Rooney will be protected and won’t play and the value could be in a narrow United win. A 2-0 home win makes some appeal is the recommended bet. Following their outstanding win over Barcelona on Wednesday Arsenal have what looks on paper a straightforward task playing at Leyton Orient on Sunday. There is though no value here unless the unthinkable happens and even though the

Mr. Ed
To me, and to most other footy fans, the World Cup is like Christmas, but much, much more exciting. You look forward to it for ages, you spend most of it arguing with family (whether it be about the quality of the sprouts or the point of Emile Heskey's existence) and afterwards you weigh about 3 stone heavier from all the eating and drinking. However, unlike the over-rated Christmas which shortchanges us with a mere 12 days, the World Cup is here for a full month! Although to be fair, the nation only really remembers the first two and half weeks up until England get knocked out, then the tournament is wiped from our collective memory through a good session of the other national past-time; binge-drinking. So, with just one week to go until kick-off, here is my World Cup blog, so sit back, have a biccy and relax with a nice World Cuppa (terrible, I know). I am particularly excited about this World Cup for a variety of reasons, none of which are tied to England's prospects in the competition

Big Man with Football
Tonight's NFC East clash between the Eagles and Redskins should be a straightforward call. Washington are underdogs despite playing at home, they've beaten the Eagles already this year and against a quarterback that is known for taking chances, their defense is generating plenty of turnovers. Following all known wisdom for gridiron betting, the logical play is to get with the Redskins – and yet we’re not going to do that. We’re not going to do that simply because the Eagles are an improving side, a team that would be sitting on top of their division right now if Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson had spent the full year playing together. They’ve got too many receiving weapons for a Washington side that concedes yards, while Seán McDermott is gaining lots of plaudits lately for the way he has created a savvy, intelligent defensive unit that adapts brilliantly over the course of games. Even more important is the difficulty that the Redskins have at the

Sunday's hurling double header from Semple Stadium will certainly provide something for everyone - there is a David vs Goliath act, one projected close call match, a real mix in the betting and four of the best hurling teams in the country battling it out for a place in the last four of the All Ireland race. Kilkenny are the hottest of favourites to advance, with Hills and Boylesports heading the betting market at 1/8 about the Cats winning inside the distance. Hills are clearly trying to draw in some business here of any type because they're also best priced about Limerick at 7/1 with Bet365. Meanwhile draw bettors can get 16/1 in several places in the market. Galway's performance against Kilkenny in the Leinster Hurling final supposedly changed the entire hurling landscape and undoubtedly the betting market was completely shaken up by that result. Having been priced as short as 4/11 to win the All Ireland before the game, Kilkenny are now an odds against bet to win the All
