Mancini looks at Second Spot

Posted on 04 Apr 2011 at 22:00 PM by pjmar
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has insisted his side can finish second in the Premier League table this season ( 1/6 City - to finish in the top four ). The Blues romped to a 5-0 victory over Sunderland at Eastlands on Sunday, with Adam Johnson, Carlos Tevez, David Silva, Patrick Vieira and Yaya Toure all getting on the scoresheet. Arch rivals Manchester United were the only other side who picked up all three points last weekend, as they came from two goals down to beat West Ham United at Upton Park. Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur were all held to draws in their respective games which means City now sit in third place in the Premier League. The Gunners ( 5/1 to win the Premier League ) currently hold second position in the table and have a three-point advantage over City. Mancini believes the Blues can close the gap and snatch second spot from the north London club. He said: "We can be runners-up. Why not? "I am very happy because we got three points, moved above ...

‘ 99’ with a couple of Flakes

Posted on 06 Apr 2011 at 09:09 AM by iancatley
The Masters golf’s Greatest Show on Earth starts Thursday with a field of 99 and the top two in the betting are a couple of flakes well worth avoiding. While all the coverage still targets Woods and Mickelson, neither justifies support especially at the prices on offer. Woods is an almost unbelievable 12/1. Unbelievable because he isn’t favourite and on all known form he should be twice that price. By his own admission his putting stroke, a gift from the Gods until now, has deserted him. Perhaps a return to his father’s principles will resurrect his form but on these greens nothing but his A-game will do. Until last weekend, Mickelson was equally fragile perhaps even worse. After two remarkably ordinary rounds in Houston, Phil suddenly found some magic. He has been dreadful, now he is 13/2 favourite to retain his title. Do you believe that all those 4, 5, 6 footers he has missing like clock-work are going to go in on the marble stair cases that are Augusta’s greens ...

Kerry the best U21 bet

Posted on 06 Apr 2011 at 12:31 PM by Lone Shark
Three crucial Under-21 championship games tonight should leave us with a much clearer picture as to who the main contenders are for this year's All Ireland title at this grade and based on the boomakers' odds, it's likely to be Cork scraping home in Munster, Longford by a whisker in Portlaoise and Tyrone to move on to meet Cavan in the Ulster decider. Taking the Leinster game first, and it's understandable that bookmakers are struggling to separate these two counties. Both sides have dug deep to secure some very hard fought wins on the way to this final and perhaps the only way of distinguishing between the sides is to look at the calibre of opponent they have faced along the way. Longford beat Westmeath in their semi final, due in no small part to John Heslin's destructive cameo when introduced off the bench, while against Meath, Longford overcame the mental trauma of seeing a big lead whittled away to defiantly come through in extra time. Wexford looked polished and ...

Phil believes the Masters to be wide open

Posted on 07 Apr 2011 at 13:58 PM by pjmar
World number three Phil Mickelson ( 11/2 - US Masters outright winner ) believes it is going to be a wide open tournament at the Masters , which starts at the pristine Augusta National course in Georgia on Thursday. The experienced American goes into the competition as the firm favourite to secure the famous Green Jacket and win his fourth Masters title ( 8/11 for an American to win the Masters ). 'Lefty' goes into the prestigious event on the back of an impressive performance at the Houston Open, as the lifted the trophy in Texas. However, attentions now turn to the 75th Masters tournament and the defending champion has admitted that a number of top players will be challenging for the Green Jacket. He said: "I've always felt that this tournament has a lot of players that are playing well heading in. "Guys gear their game for this and it can be one of the toughest tournaments to win because so many guys are playing well. And I think that as a player, I would never ...

Leinster fancied to merely scrape home

Posted on 07 Apr 2011 at 17:49 PM by Ruck Driver
Last year the Heineken Cup quarter finals weekend was perhaps one of the most enthralling weekends of rugby that took place all year. One point wins for Leinster and Biarritz had the crowds gasping for breath by the end, while Toulouse's demolition of Stade Francais was as awesome a performance as we saw from any club in the entire campaign. The corresponding fixtures are fast approaching and here in Ireland, most of the attention will be on the Aviva stadium where Leinster are generally five point favourites against Leicester Tigers. Leinster lost nothing in defeat to Munster last weekend and with a lot of people using the recent Six Nations clash between Ireland and England as a formguide, the home side are proving very popular in the betting this week. A five point handicap is generally available and the reasons for getting behind Leinster at that price are plentiful. Louis Deacon, a rock of reliability (or a lock of reliability perhaps?) in the Leicester pack is likely to be available ...

Wolves to come unstuck against Toffees

Posted on 08 Apr 2011 at 23:47 PM by Formex
It has not been a good week for Chelsea. A draw at the Britannia Stadium against Stoke last Saturday effectively ended their hopes of retaining their Premier League title and the midweek Champions League defeat at home to Man United has left them with a mountain to climb in the second leg at Old Trafford next Tuesday. A home game against bottom club Wigan who they thrashed 8-0 at the Bridge last season maybe just what is required to take their mind off Tuesday night but no doubt Roberto Martinez will be dreading the prospect. Not only did the Wigan boss have to endure the 8-0 hammering he also saw his team humiliated 6-0 in the reverse fixture at the DW Stadium earlier this season. The Latics have never kept a clean sheet against Chelsea and you can bet that record won’t be broken this Saturday. The Blues will hope that a few goals will get them in the mood for United and that Fernando Torres can at last break his Chelsea duck. Man United have a home game themselves on Saturday when ...

Avoid Dead Rubbers in final round

Posted on 09 Apr 2011 at 01:11 AM by Lone Shark
The last week of the league is invariably fraught with danger when it comes to recommending league bets, particularly when assessing matches involving at least one team with little or nothing to play for. Dublin should not be as big as 4/6 to beat Galway on form, but Pat Gilroy's men are essentially travelling to Pearse Stadium for a challenge match while Galway are playing for their division one survival. Without an inside line into the state of the Dublin dressing room before such a game, betting on that kind of fixture is a fool's game. Thankfully there are more than enough competitive games to keep our interest. Cork play Armagh by the Lee with Cork chasing a league final spot and Armagh desperately trying to avoid the drop. Armagh, on current form, could be in for a hiding here, but regular Cork starters such as Aidan Walsh and Donncha O'Connor are left out so Cork might not run up a big total here. Generally speaking Armagh don't get badly beaten by anyone - thought ...
