Why's it called Red Dog? Haven't got a Scooby Doo, but nearly every casino proudly pronounces that it is home to Red Dog. Like a kennel, or something. A red one, perhaps?...If anyone does know please comment below and I'll sort some free chips at my favourite online casino, Jackpot Games, for you.

I wasn't even a fan of the game until recently. I thought it has a stupid name and therefore is a stupid game. It really isn't. In fact it's one of those games that is so simple and the logic so balanced - a bit like Hi-Lo - that you can happily play for hours. It's got a pretty great margin too, and you do feel you're so close to beating the casino on every hand.

For those that haven't taken Red Dog for a walk then this is how it works:

You place an ante bet and two cards are dealt. As the cards are displayed a counter will slide across a board of numbers and payouts. The number of cards between the two displayed is the key to the game. For example, if a 3 and a 7 is dealt (suite is irrelevant) then between a 3 and a 7 there are 3 cards: 4, 5 and 6. When there are 3 cards separating the two dealt then the payout is 2:1. If there are only two cards the payout is 4:1. If there is only one card, say between 4 and 6 (where the only winning card is a 5) then the payout is 5:1. So although the chances decrease as the gap between the two cards shrinks the payout increases proportionally.

If there is a bigger gap then three then the payout is even money, but the addition of a raise option allows you to really push your winnings up when this occurs. Hey, if you're feeling really brave raise on a gap of 1. At 5:1 it really will make a difference.

The biggest payout of the game is 11:1 and you won't need to do a thing! Simply play and if a three-of-a-kind appears then - bang - you're in the money!

On hitting a pair the game is a push. The same is true if you hit consecutive cards on the draw, i.e. 2 and 3 - there is no gap and the game cannot continue.

Like all casino games you should give them a try first for free. At Jackpot Games they have free tables which can be accessed without registering. Simply locate the game and load it. it will ask you to sign up but by closing the box you will be put straight into the game.

It really is a great little game, and can whittle away the hours and boost your coffers. Don't expect mega wins unless you're betting very big, but for low stakes entertainment if offers a little more thrill and a little more return than a simple Hi-Lo game.

Check the game out, here.

Have fun and all the best,
