Bonuses and more bonuses

Last week I discussed cashback bonuses here and I’d like to continue this with a look at other types of bonuses regularly available on casino websites. I’ll be looking at when you can expect them, what they’re really worth and, if you get a choice, which ones to go for.

I think it’s important that we look at how almost all bonuses are awarded, played and played through before discussing anything else, as it’s easy to get carried a long by a big bonus figure and to ignore the stuff that will allow actually see the bonus, or any winnings from it, enter your bank balance. If you didn’t understand what I meant by play through then this article is going to be useful to you.

So when can you expect a bonus? Well, straight after your first money deposit normally. Most casinos will reward a percentage figure up to a maximum amount. For example 100% up to $50. So deposit $50 and get another $50 free. However, there are a few offers called no deposit bonuses which do exactly what they say: they give you money for nothing. Simply sign up and get some free cash. But let’s get this straight right now... they're not free.

After that you can look forward to monthly deposit bonuses, cash back periods on losses, loyalty point bonuses, and free chip bonuses.  You can expect the first two to be made available at set periods in the calendar month or week and points become chips when a certain number is reached or claimed. Free chips and additional deposit bonuses depend on your misfortune at the casino – a good outfit will keep an eye out for good players having bad luck and reward bonuses.

But going back to what I said earlier about no deposit bonuses not being free. Well, in effect, nearly all bonuses aren’t free. There are always terms and conditions that mean only certain games qualify, a certain percentage of the bonus must be wagered – even the bet amount per hand can determine your ability to cash the winnings out. With no deposit bonuses this is more pronounced, with maximum win ceilings added, even limited time frames with which to use the bonus and claim. Always read the fine print; that big figure bonus may almost be impossible to cash out.

My recommendation, other than to read the terms and conditions, is to go with brands you know. They’re generally in the eye of the public more and therefore scrutinized, meaning you’re less likely to fall foul to a dodgy bonus. Finally, stick to the simplest bonus: deposit = cash. Yes, the cash must be wagered but normally at a sensible amount that will allow you to walk away with your deserved winnings.

My favourite casino: Jackpot Games. Get up to €250 free in their 100% bonus. Click here to play.
